Virginia Ballot Access Bill Passes First Hurdle

January 18th, 2013
On January 18, a subcommittee of the Virginia Senate Privileges and Elections Committee passed SB 690 by 4-2. The bill lowers the number of signatures for presidential candidates (both in presidential primaries and in the general election) from 10,000 signatures to 5,000 signatures. Now it goes to the full committee.
The full committee on the same day defeated SB 964, which would have changed the poll-closing hour from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. See this story. Thanks to Shelley Tamres for the news about SB 690. UPDATE: see this story about the bill, which says that Democratic Senator J. Chapman Petersen voted against the ballot access bill because the ballot would be too cluttered if it passes. Actually, before 1970, Virginia only required 1,000 signatures for presidential candidates in the general election, and Virginia has never had a general election ballot with more than seven presidential candidates.

Dear Virginia Libertarians,

Please see the message below from Bill Redpath about lobbying this coming Monday. SB 690 would reduce the number of signatures required for groups other than the major parties to gain access to the presidential election ballot from 10,000 to 5,000 signatures in the Commonwealth and from 400 to 200 signatures in each congressional district. Please contact Bill Redpath (wredpath2@yahoo.com) for more information.

We are still seeking more people for lobbying at the State Capitol for SB 690 on Monday, January 21, which would reduce the number of signatures to place a presidential ticket on the ballot in Virginia from 10,000 to 5,000.

There will be members of several Virginia political parties there, including Libertarian Party members.

Please join us.

I will be driving down from Northern Virginia on Monday, leaving during the 7AM hour.  I plan to arrive at the State Capitol about 10AM.  I anticipate a full day of lobbying members of the Virginia House and Senate, with emphasis on members of the Senate and House Privileges and Elections Committees.

Details as to where we will specifically be meeting have not been worked out yet, but I will be reachable by cell phone over the weekend and on Monday a703-864-2132.

Thank you very much, and I look forward to seeing you in Richmond on Monday.
