I was told that a very large group of gun control bills are to be heard on Friday at 8:30 in the morning in the Senate Courts of Justice!  The entire meeting will be nothing but gun control bills.

I NEED TO CONFIRM THIS - so for now, just put it on your calendars!

2.  Death Star subcommittee has been dissolved!  Locksmith/Electronic Security carry bill passes out of subcommittee!

I had heard a rumor that the Deathstar subcommittee was not going to exist this year.  As of last night when I sent out the legislative alert on HB 1604, the Militia, Police and Public Safety subcommittee #3 still showed its standard makeup of 2 Republicans and 3 Democrats.  However, when I arrived today, it had been reconfigured to be 4 Republicans and 3 Democrats.

The new make up is:

Republicans:  Merricks (Chairman), Morefield, Morris, Rush
Democrats:  Tyler, Kory, Surovell

However, this is nothing more than a political slight-of-hand.  The Republican leadership has been actively discouraging its members from putting in pro-gun bills this year, so they don't really have any pro-gun bills to kill off with a Deathstar subcommittee!  Nice try, but no cigar.  They are still working against gun owners because they want to lie low in an election year.  Gee, a great strategy to invigorate Republican gun owners and get them to the polls!

VCDL members showed up to support HB 1604, Delegate Ferral's bill to allow locksmiths and electronic security personnel with a CHP to carry a concealed handgun FOR THEIR OWN SELF-DEFENSE.  Regular armed security, including those responding to alarms, must still get special approval to carry a gun from DCJS.

The bill passed out of committee by a vote of 6 for and 1 against!  The bill now moves to the full committee to be voted on, most likely this Friday.
