Stop Burning Food: Ethanol Waiver Requested

Dear Friends,

Because burning food in the presence of a record-breaking nationwide drought is economic and moral folly, I wrote Governor Bob McDonnell (August 2) urging that he request a waiver allowed under the Congressionally required, EPA administered Ethanol from corn fuel mandate.

Diverting food to auto fuel is driving up consumer food and fuel prices, directly harming Virginia’s grain, livestock and poultry farmers, and may worsen runoff fertilizer pollution in the Chesapeake Bay.

On August 27 Governor McDonnell requested that EPA Administrator, Lisa Peterson, issue a waiver of the Ethanol mandate, provided under the law, that ethanol be added to gasoline fuels from a portion of America’s corn crop which is now set aside for fuel and not food purposes.

You can see my letter to Gov. McDonnell and his letter to the EPA here. I applaud Governor McDonnell’s actions, and hope that the EPA will recognize the serious economic harm from continuing EPA’s ethanol mandate which it is imposing on Virginia’s families, farms and small businesses.

The EPA is seeking public input on the waiver through September 26. I urge Virginians to make their views known to end this wasteful and costly practice in the presence of a record-breaking drought. (See the EPA article here.)

We Built It

August 29, 2012

Dear Friends and Fellow Virginians,

Maybe it's because he uses a teleprompter everywhere he goes, but we don't normally catch too many outright gaffes coming from President Obama (he normally reserves those for Joe Biden). That's why I was surprised when, a few weeks ago, he said that entrepreneurs weren't responsible for creating the jobs that drive this country's economy. Click here to watch Obama's gaffe.

Then I got to thinking. That wasn't a gaffe at all. It was a window into what he really believes.  President Obama sincerely believes that hardworking Americans and small business owners don't deserve credit for creating jobs. Hillary Clinton believes that "it takes a village to raise a child." Barack Obama takes her logic one step further: it takes the collective to grow the economy.

Yes, you heard him right, "you didn't build that." Well Mr. President I can tell you in fact we did build it.

It's wonderful to be surrounded by conservatives from across the country. Yesterday we heard from Virginia's own Delegate Barbara Comstock and future Texas Senator Ted Cruz. While we have a lot of business to take care of this week, we all have one main goal: defeat Barack Obama.

One of yesterday's speakers, former Alabama Congressman Artur Davis, spoke about President Obama's disappointment firsthand. Artur has come a long way in four years: from giving a nominating speech for Obama at the 2008 Democratic National Convention, to voting against Obamacare and changing parties to Republican.

I think Artur's story speaks to where we have come as a country. Many Americans were duped into believing the hype. Even while Conservatives worried about an Obama presidency, we never could have imagined the disaster that it has become.

We're only half way done at the Republican Convention and we've accomplished quite a bit. We've adopted a new Party Platform that is one of the most conservative since Ronald Reagan won our party's nomination.  I've had the opportunity to hear conservatives from across the country all say the same thing: we have to beat President Obama at the polls in November.

Tonight I had the honor of joining my fellow Republican Attorneys General that have fought alongside me to repeal Obamacare. I can tell you that our battle doesn't end with healthcare. We are working together to halt the unconstitutional and illegal overreaches by President Obama and his administration!

We've been able to stop President Obama on many fronts, but unfortunately he has been largely successful at delivering his version of "Change." When he couldn't pass legislation like "Cap and Trade," he has used his cronies in Washington to enact burdensome, job-destroying regulations.

Take a look at the EPA (which I have long referred to as the Employment Prevention Agency). They are smothering our economy and trying to destroy the coal industry, an industry vital to Virginia's economy and our nation's ability to become energy independent.

We need to stand up and tell President Obama that government didn't build this country, Americans built it.

The determination of America's job creators is what drives this economy. The success of America's job creators is what made this country great. Under President Obama our entrepreneurs are being held back. Four more years of a Barack Obama presidency and things will look even worse.

That's why it's critical that we get not just every Republican, but every individual that believes in our American values to the polls in November. If you've been waiting to get involved we need your help now. President Obama has had a four year head start on us and we can't afford to let anyone slip through the cracks.

Please contact my office at 703-766-0635 or email Noah at noah@cuccinelli.com and we'll get you connected with our other great volunteers!

Sincerely,

Ken Cuccinelli, II

[Peninsula-Patriots] An open letter

I enjoyed the speeches at the convention tonight. Ann Romney seemed very sincere. I know we must support Romney but I confess I do so with reservations.

This is an open letter a Virginian wrote to Governor McDonnell and Governor Romney today.

My open letter to Govs. McDonnell and Romney:

Dear Gov. McDonnell,

I have served RPV and its candidates as a volunteer for 22 of my 38 years. I have been chairman of my local unit, my legislative district, and a Republican member of my Board of Supervisors in Campbell County. I have been stabbed in the back plenty of
times by party leadership for taking principled stands. But the rape of the vo
ting rights of Virginia's RNC delegation today, especially in light of the early support you and Mr. Bolling gave Romney, DEMANDS a response. Will you demand an apology from Romney and the RNC, on behalf of your own state's delegation? Please see the letter below that I sent to Gov Romney tonight, and I would appreciate your reply.

Gov. Romney,

I have swallowed numerous significant policy disagreements to support you (gay marriage in Massachusetts, Romneycare, conflicting positions on abortion, just to name a few), because the alternative is so bad.

But I have heard today from friends in the Virginia delegation who were ridden around Tampa in a bus for an hour and a half to keep them from voting against the naked power grab you and the RNC rigged with the change to Rule 15, taking delegate selections out of the hands of the grassroots in the future and leaving them to be handpicked by powerful establishment GOP politicians instead.

SHAME ON YOU, sir! You have left those of us who stand on principle, who actually do "believe in America," including fundamental principles like "government by the consent of the governed, and power coming from the people up to our elected representatives instead of the reverse. You have declared open warfare on the hardest-working activists our party has, even as you need them the most. Rush Limbaugh and Michelle Malkin pegged this one exactly right, sir. You have left us with an impossible choice. This is even worse than the lesser of two evils: It is the choice of which practitioner of slimy, thuggish Chicago politics we will choose.

I believe I speak for all the liberty-loving Virginians you held hostage on a bus today outside the convention, keeping them from exercising their right to vote in true "New Black Panthers" style. SHAME ON YOU, SIR! Shame, shame, shame!
