A Better Way to Fight the Online Theft of American Ideas and Jobs

In recent weeks, we’ve heard from many Floridians about the anti-Internet piracy bills making their way through Congress. On the Senate side, I have been a co-sponsor of the PROTECT IP Act because I believe it’s important to protect American ingenuity, ideas and jobs from being stolen through Internet piracy, much of it occurring overseas through rogue websites in China. As a senator from Florida, a state with a large presence of artists, creators and businesses connected to the creation of intellectual property, I have a strong interest in stopping online piracy that costs Florida jobs.

However, we must do this while simultaneously promoting an open, dynamic Internet environment that is ripe for innovation and promotes new technologies.

Earlier this year, this bill passed the Senate Judiciary Committee unanimously and without controversy. Since then, we've heard legitimate concerns about the impact the bill could have on access to the Internet and about a potentially unreasonable expansion of the federal government's power to impact the Internet. Congress should listen and avoid rushing through a bill that could have many unintended consequences.

Therefore, I have decided to withdraw my support for the Protect IP Act. Furthermore, I encourage Senator Reid to abandon his plan to rush the bill to the floor. Instead, we should take more time to address the concerns raised by all sides, and come up with new legislation that addresses Internet piracy while protecting free and open access to the Internet.

Bear Witness Central Joins the Fight Against SOPA/PIPA

On January 17th, 2012 Bear Witness joined the fight against the internet censorship by partially blocking the website with a warning sign about the internet censorship in protest for the looming PIPA and SOPA Bills. We are joining with many other national websites across the internet who are going dark on January 18th in protest or are partially blocking the website with a warning sign.

Congressman Darrell Issa has scheduled an emergency hearing of his Oversight and Governance Committee, in a last ditch effort to stop H.R. 3261, the House version of the Internet takeover bill. The hearing will be held January 18th.

On Jan 24th, Congress will vote to pass internet censorship in the Senate, even though the vast majority of Americans are opposed. We need to kill the bill - PIPA in the Senate and SOPA in the House - to protect our rights to free speech, privacy, and prosperity.

Our First Amendment protected right of free speech is now directly under assault by a berserk U.S. Congress and White House. Our voluntary blockage is being done in conjunction with countless other websites to help the public understand the serious dangers in SOPA and related bills awaiting passage in Congress right now.

SOPA and PIPA are to the First Amendment what the NDAA military detention and trial provisions are to the Fourth, Fifth, And Sixth Amendments - allowing for the "black bagging" and "disappearing" of websites on a mere accusation alone.

Without our First Amendment rights, peaceful redress, correction, and removal of oath breaking officials becomes impossible, leaving you with only the Second Amendment to secure your rights. The internet is our most powerful weapon of free speech, which is exactly why the powers that be want to shut it down. With a free internet, they no longer have a monopoly on the exchange of ideas and the spreading of information, and that scares the hell out of them. So, we can expect them to do all they can to find a way to shut the internet down or to tightly control it.

Spread the word! We must defend all of the Bill of Rights, for all Americans. Period.

Our website will continue to be available after clicking off the blockage, to bring relevant information that needs to be read before is taken off the internet.

Times have changed… people and society have also changed. The old-traditional type of dictatorship is history; there is a new kind, for evil has mutated. Trying to fight these new dictators using our traditional methods is like trying to kill a rhino with a feather pillow.

When democracy “defeated” Communism back in 1991, many world leaders thought that it was dead, but it was not. Communism was mutating, forced by its inability to win the final battle in the traditional field of brute force.

It only forced Communism to look for another way to win world power. Communists took three steps backwards and about two thousands steps forward. They changed weapons of mass destruction for electronic voting machines. They used corruption to buy consciousness. The first task on the agenda of these new constitutional dictators, after they gain power through elections, is to destroy the economy.
