1. Legislative update

Yesterday several bills were heard in committees.
SENATE COURTS OF JUSTICE
SB 608, Senator Carrico, lifetime CHP bill. This bill is a duplicate of the Delegate Lingamfelter's HB 736. Both bills have new language which has been substituted to eliminate some serious problems. However, VCDL is working with both Delete Lingamfelter and Senator Carrico to fix some other problems, one critical, with the substitute bills. SB 608 passed unanimously out of committee and heads to the finance committee.

SB 510, Senator Favola, takes away gun rights for certain violent misdemeanors, passed out of committee on a 10-2-3 vote. The bill now heads to finance, where hopefully it will die. VCDL strongly opposes this bill.

Voting anti-liberty: Norment, Saslaw, Marsh, Howell, Lucas, Edwards, Puller, McDougle, McEachin, Stuart
Not voting (abstain): Vogel, Stanley, Reeves

SB 520, Senator McEachin, "universal" background check bill, KILLED by a 6 to 9 vote! VCDL had strongly opposed this bill.
Voting pro-liberty: Norment, Edwards, Obenshain, McDougle, Stuart, Vogel, Stanley, Reeves, Garrett
Voting anti-liberty: Saslaw, Marsh, Howell, Lucas, Puller, McEachin
HOUSE COMMITTEE ON EDUCATION
HB 66, Delegate Ramadan, requires K-12 schools to have at least one resource officer passed out of committee, but has just been killed in Appropriations. VCDL was neutral on this bill as a poor execution (resource officer) of a great idea (more guns in schools, preferable concealed handguns).
HB 307, Delegate Lingamfelter, allows grades 7-12 to offer hunter safety courses. Passed unanimously out of the committee and heads to the House Floor. VCDL strongly supported this bill.
SUNDAY HUNTING
For those interested in Sunday hunting (VCDL is neutral), a Sunday hunting bill (HB 1237, Delegate Gilbert) has passed the House today by a 71 to 27 vote and is headed to the Senate.

2. URGENT: VCDL booth at Virginia Beach gun show still needs some helpers!
*****************************************
We have an urgent need of your help to man the VCDL table at the Virginia Beach Gun Show, which is being held at the Virginia Beach Convention Center on February 1-2, 2014 (THIS WEEKEND!).
As you can see below, we have four shifts to cover. If you can't do all of one, let Virginia Beach gun show coordinator, Gary F. Moeller, know what you can do and he'll try to work you in.

For new volunteers: To volunteer you must be a member of VCDL. You will be paired with an experienced person and you will learn the ropes quickly.
