Correcting Misconceptions About HJ 497 and SJ 269 - Convention of States Project

Convention of States Action
Hey guys,

Senator Black is circulating dis-information.  Please read the COS point-by-point response.

3 Simple Facts our Opponents Just Can't Seem to Get Right:

1. Convention of States Supporters Include: Ken Cuccinelli, Mat Staver, Governor Bobby Jindal, Randy Barnett, Sarah Palin, Mark Levin, Glenn Beck, David Barton, Colonel Allen West, Senator Ron Johnson, Retired Senator Tom Coburn, and countless other conservative leaders.  Opponents have accused us of being supported by the likes of George Soros and  This is a flat-out lie and slander against our organization.  Nothing could be further from the truth!

2. The States Control the Convention Process.  A Convention of States was put in the Constitution for the express purpose of giving the states a way of limiting the federal government.  Under Article V it takes 34 states to start the convention process.  Then the states appoint the delegates to the convention.  Finally, 38 states have to ratify any proposals coming out of the convention before they become part of the Constitution.  The process is state-driven from beginning to end, and has numerous checks balances to ensure its safety.  Our Founders know what they were doing.

3. Only Amendments that Limit the Power of the Federal Government Can be Considered.  HJR 497 and SJ 269 only allow a convention to consider amendments that will limit the power of the federal government.  HJR 499 only allows a convention to consider a balanced budget amendment.  The people's rights under the First, Second, or any other Amendment are not up for grabs!  (And the NRA does NOT oppose our effort; in fact, one of their top attorneys, Chuck Cooper, is on our legal board!) The only people who need to fear a convention are the politicians and bureaucrats in Washington, D.C.
