Week 1 is in the books

Wow! What a week!

What a week!  After all the hard work we put in last year, on Wednesday, January 10th, I was finally sworn in as the new State Senator for the 24th Senate District. Even though it has only been a couple of days, the session has begun in full force, and we are hard at work! A lot has happened since the session began, so let me take an opportunity to give you a breakdown of what to expect going forward. First things first, as you may know, after the most recent election, Republicans were unable to take back the majority in the Senate. 19 of the 40 senators are Republicans, putting the GOP in the minority. However, this does not discourage me. One thing that I have always tried to exemplify as Sheriff was to represent everyone regardless of political beliefs. I will absolutely be taking this mentality with me to Richmond. It is time we tear down the Blue Brick Wall, but if we insist on keeping barriers between us, let's make it a nice purple picket fence where we can come together on issues that are important to all Virginians rather than fixate on the 5% that divides us What I am doing for you While I have more than just these bills, here are a few that I am the most excited about!  Click here to see the full list of bills that I am sponsoring SB 197:  Authorizes the Attorney General to institute or conduct criminal prosecutions in cases involving a violation of criminal sexual assault or commercial sex trafficking when such crimes are committed against children. SB 201: To create a program for local, regional, or statewide notification of a missing or endangered child when the criteria for an Amber Alert is not met. SB 199: Requires the Board of Education, in collaboration with the Virginia Community College System, to develop and maintain a current, comprehensive, and uniform list of industry-recognized workforce credentials that students may take as a substitute for certain units of credit required for graduation I have more that will be introduced soon so please keep an eye out!   In addition to the Bills that I am submitting, I was given my committee assignments this week. It is a true honor to be able to serve on: Transportation  Privileges and Elections Local Government. Even though these will be the committees that I will be focusing on, that does not mean that I will not be advocating for each one of you on every other issue. As I have always said, I care about the opinions of each one of my constituents. Regardless of whether or not you are a Republican, Democrat or independent, I want to hear about what is important to you.
