| | | | | On Tuesday, February 16, the House and Senate observed crossover, the date on which both chambers must complete work on their respective legislation. After a marathon eight-hour floor session on Monday followed by a much shorter session on Tuesday, the House finished consideration of its bills. The House is now reviewing Senate bills while the Senate hears House bills.
The House is working diligently to defend and advance conservative principles. We brokered a bipartisan agreement to secure the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens, advanced legislation to protect religious liberty, and are fighting federal government overreach. Our work will continue through the second half of this session. Prior to adjournment on March 12, we will consider legislation from the Senate and complete work on the state budget. |
| This Sunday, the House budget proposal will be released. Our top priority is to structurally balance our budget. Unlike Washington, we do not rely on contrivances to conceal over-spending. Rather, we are committed to introducing a conservative fiscally responsible budget that safeguards taxpayer dollars while responsibly investing in the core functions of state government. |
Throughout the year, I solicit legislative requests from constituents. While I'm unable to address every suggestion I receive, I always carry a number bills in an effort to respond to these requests.
This year is no different. Last spring, a constituent asked me to research the plight of adult children who are denied reasonable visitation rights with their parents. These rights may be denied by a guardian such as a business manager or stepparent. A high-profile case involves the daughter of Casey Kasem, who was denied visitation with her father. Her case highlighted flaws in many states' laws, including Virginia's.
To address this problem, I introduced House Bill 342, which clarifies that a guardian may not unreasonably restrict an incapacitated person's ability to communicate with, visit, or interact with other persons with whom the incapacitated person has an established relationship. I believe this commonsense measure will protect the rights of adult parents and children. The bill passed the House unanimously and will soon be heard in the Senate.

| Commending Camden Neville |
During every legislative session, Senators and Delegates introduce resolutions commending or memorializing individuals and organizations. Earlier today I had the privilege of hosting the Neville family in Richmond as their 12 year old son, Camden, was recognized for his accomplishments as an archer. We surprised Camden with the resolution, which may be read online HERE. An outstanding archer, Camden has earned state, national, and international awards. Congratulations Camden!
