Regulations Kill Opportunty

October 5, 2012

Dear Friends and Fellow Virginians,

In the past three weeks I've been to every corner of our Commonwealth from Hampton Roads to Bristol and Wise in Southwest, and Leesburg in the North.

This week I was in Southside where I had the opportunity to speak with the Martinsville and Danville Chambers of Commerce. I encountered the same sentiments of other local business leaders I've met across the state. But in their region, with the highest unemployment in Virginia, there is a greater sense of distress and concern.

The biggest threat to businesses isn't the possibility of tax hikes - as bad as that would be - it's the uncertainty and costs imposed on the market that are directly attributable to the explosion of regulations under the current administration.

If Mitt Romney wins it will be a huge victory to stop the rising tide of regulation. Governor Romney has called these regulations, "unprecedented, unpredictable, and unproductive." He's right. He's also pledged to repeal the Federal healthcare law.

However, you can bet that in his last two months President Obama is going to try to ram through all the job-killing legislation and regulations he can.

He may even have good intentions, but we all know that the results will not be good for American entrepreneurs and taxpayers. The fact is regulations kill opportunity and economic growth.

Last year, the President placed on hold EPA regulations on ozone levels. I think it's a safe bet that he'll revisit that next year, if he gets more "flexibility" by being re-elected.

We cannot afford this anymore. We have to live within our means and put a stop to the destruction of our economy with out of control and illegal regulations.

With every expansion of government, be it at the federal or state level, the private sector is crowded out. This is what I heard this week in Southside, last week in Southwest, and the week before (and again yesterday) in Southeast Virginia.

We need to change the culture of government to one of prudence. The good news is we don't have to do anything radical or even that drastic. We don't even have to look very far. All we have to do is learn from our founding documents.

Now is not the time to abandon the founding principles that made this country to most prosperous of all time.

We need to elect Romney-Ryan and George Allen next month.  There's too much at stake.

Sincerely,

Ken Cuccinelli, II
