This Saturday, May 6, at the 2017 Special State Convention of the Libertarian Party of Virginia, our members will be electing a Vice Chair, Secretary, Platform Committee Representative, and Credentials Committee Representative.

Descriptions of each position and information on each of the declared candidates are below. This information is provided as courtesy to allow our members the opportunity to get to know the candidates in advance. Other candidates for these positions may still be nominated at the convention.

Vice Chair

The Vice Chair shall chair meetings of the State Central Committee and all Party conventions in the absence of the Chair. Should the office of Chair become vacant for any reason, the Vice Chair shall assume the Chair. The Vice Chair shall also carry out such other duties as may be assigned by the State Central Committee.

William Redpath

Candidate for LPVA Vice Chair

Bill Redpath has been a member of the Libertarian Party since 1984, having run for office five times in Virginia, including being the Libertarian candidate for Governor in 2001, U.S. Senate in 2008, and US House of Representatives, Tenth District, in 2010.

He served as Chair of the Libertarian Party of Virginia from 1989 to 1991 and from 2014 to 2016, and as Chair of the Libertarian National Committee from 2006 to 2010.

See page 8 of the LPVA Governing Documents for a complete job description.

Jackie Mason

Candidate for LPVA Secretary

I first joined the Libertarian Party in 2000.

As a member of the Libertarian Party of Washington State, I founded the College Libertarians of Western Washington University, was employed as State Executive Director, held elected office as a Precinct Committee Officer, ran as the Libertarian candidate for Washington Secretary of State, and served as the Volunteers Coordinator for the Bruce Guthrie for Senate Campaign.

Since joining the Libertarian Party of Virginia last year, I spent several months volunteering full-time for the Johnson/Weld campaign organizing campaign events, recruiting volunteers, delivering signs and literature, and administering the campaign's texting outreach first for Virginia and then nationally. The SCC originally appointed me on September 24 to serve out the rest of former Secretary Marc Montoni's term (until 2018), but I've chosen to stand for election this year because I believe that two years is too long to be an officer without being elected by the membership.

If elected to continue serving as your Secretary, I will modernize our information systems to remove the bottlenecks between our local activists and the member, volunteer, donor, and voter data they need to be effective. Let's finally bring the Libertarian Party of Virginia into the 21st Century!

Platform Committee Representative

Represent Virginia on the 20-member Platform Committee and help draft proposed changes to the Libertarian Party Platform

The Platform Committee typically has at least one in-person meeting several months in advance of the national convention and then a final meeting on the day before the national convention begins. The national convention will be July 1-3, 2018, in New Orleans.

Committee members are expected to invest an appreciable amount of their time into doing their jobs. Any travel costs incurred will be at personal expense.

Matt Cholko

Candidate for Platform Committee

I served as your representative on the national Platform Committee in 2016 and am seeking Virginia's appointment in 2018.  If appointed, I will use my decade of experience as a Libertarian activist, candidate, local party leader, 11th CD chairman, and campaign manager to improve our party's platform.  I do not have a pet issue, and I have no plans to attempt to push through any specific plank or amendment. Rather, I hope to help the committee put forth planks that use clear, concise language, so that our platform is easy for interested parties to understand, and for candidates to adapt for campaign use.

If appointed to the committee, I pledge to make myself easily accessible to LPVA members to discuss the platform and the work of the committee, to bring to the committee any reasonable proposal on behalf of any LPVA member, to do my best to attend all committee meetings, to respect the time of my colleagues and the delegates to the 2018 by putting forth proposals that have at least a reasonable chance of being adopted , and to work as hard and as smart as I can on behalf of the Libertarian Party.

Please vote for me!
