View this email in your browser I'd like to share with you a free newsletter I've been receiving for the past few months that has opened my eyes to the Islamist threat we now face. In saying "Islamist," I am not referring to Muslims in general or the individuals we may happen to be friends with, but to the "true believers" who think that Muhammad was the perfect man, that every word of the Quran is Allah's eternal truth, and that Sharia law should be imposed wherever they live, including here in the United States. These Islamists represent a clear and present danger, one that we have been dealing with since the 9-11 attack by al Qaeda. However, this threat has become even more vigorous in the form of the Islamic State, which is arising from the ashes of Syria and Iraq. And while we have long been used to thinking of brutal beheadings, acid attacks, and other mutilations as things that take place "over there," Islamists have regularly made their presence known in the United States over the past 13 years, and the Islamic State itself is beginning to leave its own calling cards. Given the growing Muslim population in Washington D.C. and its surroundings, this could very well be a threat that impacts us directly. It is imperative that we Americans educate ourselves about the existential threat that is coming our way. This is not a responsibility we can delegate to others, so that we can go about our daily business as if nothing was happening. Every one of us has a responsibility, both to ourselves and our families, to understand this threat and take it seriously. With that said, understanding what makes Islamists tick and how to defeat them can feel like a daunting task, and that's why I read Islam Update.
