McGuire: Bipartisan Momentum Building for Albemarle Investigation, Perriello Noticeably Silent
“Nine days ago I wrote to Governor Spanberger and Attorney General Jones and asked them to launch a full-scale investigation into how Albemarle County Public Schools handled these cases. The Governor’s office has now weighed in, and today three Democratic legislators, Senator Deeds, Delegate Callsen, and Delegate Laufer, sent their own letter making the same demand of the School Board. I welcome every one of them to this effort. Protecting children is not a Republican issue or a Democrat issue, and I am glad to see this becoming a bipartisan call.
“The Governor’s office says it is assessing all avenues. I would respectfully urge her to move from assessing to acting. Parents in Albemarle County have waited long enough. A staff member was under criminal investigation in January. Parents did not learn of it until June, when they read it in the news. The School Board itself was not told until the day before the arrest. Those facts demand a real, independent accounting — who knew, when they knew, and why families were kept in the dark.
“One voice is conspicuously missing. Tom Perriello wants to represent this community in Congress, and he has said nothing — not a word for these children, not a word for these families. Silence is a choice. If he cannot find the courage to speak when children in this community have been hurt, voters are entitled to ask what exactly he intends to stand up for.
“Mr. Perriello, join us. Add your name to the call for an independent investigation. The families of Albemarle County are watching, and they deserve better than silence.”
