Re: [Peninsula-Patriots] FW: Hope for HB 1160

There is a bit of good news about HB 1160. Sue Long contacted Del. Hodges with questions related to the governor signing the bill. Here is what she received from him:

Ms. Long,
Below is the section from the Virginia Constitution.  The House adjourned the regular session on March 10th meaning the last day for the Governor to act on a bill is April 9th.  If he does not sign a bill it will automatically become law on July 1st.

Please let me know if I can be of any further assistance.

Keith

  • (c) When there are fewer than seven days remaining in the regular or special session from the date a bill is presented to the Governor and the General Assembly adjourns to a reconvened session, the Governor shall have thirty days from the date of adjournment of the regular or special session in which to act on the bills presented to him and to exercise one of the three options set out below. If the Governor does not act on any bill, it shall become law without his signature.

There is still hope for HB1160.  If the governor doesn't mess with it and change it, even if he doesn't sign it, it will become law after 30 days which will be April 9. We still need to keep the heat on though so that he doesn't change it, making it less effective. (See my correspondence below with my delegate)

Keith,

As far as I know, Governor McDonnell has not as yet signed off on HB1160 which would help protect us from being detained indefinitely without due process of law.

I have been told , however, that even if he doesn't sign it, it will become law after 30 days without his signature.  Is that correct?  Would you know when the 30 days is up?  - Or at least, the date when the Assembly was over.

Thank you so much, Sue Long
