Virginia General Assembly Passes Legislation that adversely affects grassroots candidates challenging incumbents in 2012 |
From Ken Vaughn, tea party activist/leader and candidate for congress 11th district:
"We need volunteers to help us collect additional signatures to get on the ballot. The only requirement is that you are a registered voter in the state of Virginia. We have already collected almost all of the "recommended" 1,500 signatures to get on the ballot - but the state legislature passed a law on March 2nd (two days ago) that potentially invalidates roughly 500 of our signatures. The newly passed bill (HB 1151) passed unanimously, and we expect the governor to sign this week. While we believe we have a strong legal case to have all of our signatures accepted, we must look at the situation from a practical perspective. Every campaign must decide where to spend its resources. We have determined that it makes more sense to spend our resources collecting more signatures rather than quibbling over the new law, if such a fight can be avoided. Every time we collect a signature, we come in contact with another voter and thereby increase our name recognition; legal battles tend to be much less productive. So, our goal is to gather 1,500 signatures from the OLD district in addition to the 500 or so that we have from the new district lines and turn in a total of 2,000 signatures on March 12 - seven days from now. But to do this, we need your help! We want to have people at polling locations on Tuesday and knocking on doors on Saturday March 10. If you are available either date, or any other time this week, please contact us at 571-305-2012 or at campaign@vaughnforcongress.com. Thank you for your concern for our country. With your help, we will be able to return to fiscal responsibility and real liberty." Alexandria Tea Party does not endorse candidates. We are happy to share requests from constitutionally minded candidates for office. Please contact us at mail@alexandriateaparty.com.
