1. Newport News votes to ban open carry
Tonight about 35 gun owners showed up at the hearing in Newport News. All but two speakers were against the proposed open-carry ban, and one of the two speakers for the ban was the Delegate that carried the bill allowing local government to have such a ban. She is also the daughter of the Mayor, so he was definitely stuck voting for the ordinance. ;-) The vote was 6 to 1 for passing the ordinance. Councilwoman Dr. Patricia P. Woodbury stood solidly with gun owners and the Constitution and stated she was against any further restrictions on gun owners. She was the lone voice of reason on City Council and the sole vote against the ordinance. I wanted to stand up and cheer for her. The Mayor and the other City Council members all gave a weak argument for the open carry ban: it makes workers in the buildings "uncomfortable" to see guns carried openly. (That, of course, doesn't explain the park open-carry ban.) My argument to City Council was that there are people who are uncomfortable around minorities, so are they suggesting that we should also get rid of minorities? The gun owners that spoke did a great job and I think it made the City Council look bad to those watching the hearing on television. We had solid arguments to not restrict open carry and City Council basically admitted they were merely prejudiced against those exercising that right. They had no facts to justify the ban, only feelings and emotions. Bottom line, effective immediately, only those with CHPs and carrying concealed can carry in Newport News government buildings, parks, community and recreation centers, and at permitted events. A violation is a civil fine of $500. Updated Virginia gun laws, including local ordinances, can be found here on the VCDL website: https://vcdl.org/CarryInfo/ 2. Action Item: Isle of Wight County Board of Supervisors to have VCDL's "No local gun-control" resolution presented to them on Thursday!
The VCDL resolution will be presented to the Isle of Wight County Board of Supervisors by Mark Wooster, with Constitutional County of Isle of Wight, for their consideration on Thursday, July 16, at 6 pm at: Robert C. Claud, Sr. Board Room Isle of Wight County Courthouse Complex 17000 Courthouse Hwy Isle of Wight, VA 23397 It would be great to have people show up and stand or speak in support of that resolution. 3. Action Item: Charlotte County to vote on resolution on August 10
Charlotte County heard the "No local gun-control" resolution on Tuesday and decided to move the vote out to August 10. That gives us more time to contact the Board and urge them to pass the resolution. We need more people to contact the Board in support! Contact information for the Board of Supervisors is found here: http://charlotteva.com/BOS.htm More details on the meeting will be provided in a future alert. 4. Important: Gun owners need to all follow the "NATO Doctrine" for gun rights
I cannot emphasize enough that gun owners need to stand together. Concealed carriers that don't see a need to open carry need to stand with open carriers when their right to do so is in jeopardy. Open carriers that think getting a CHP is bowing to government control need to stand with concealed carriers when their ability to do so is in jeopardy. We are all brothers and sisters. An attack on any class of gun owners is an attack on ALL gun owners. If we are to win, we must be unified. DO NOT let the other side divide us. DO NOT let selfishness rule ("The new law doesn't affect me, so I don't care about restrictions on anyone else"). By standing together we will make an impenetrable wall that protects everyone's right to keep and bear arms. 5. Action Item: Halifax County Board of Supervisors needs more gun owners to contact them
VCDL member George Overstreet was quoted in the local paper on his efforts to get Halifax County to pass the VCDL resolution. George says we need more gun owners to help with the push. Here is a link to George's interview: http://www.yourgv.com/news/local_news/resident-proposes-pro-gun-resolution-to-halifax-county-board-of-supervisors/article_30e02dfa-c47a-11ea-83f3-cf0a90158e52.html Here is the contact information for the Halifax County Board of Supervisors. Let's send them an email: https://www.halifaxcountyva.gov/?SEC=7259F3D5-10F3-46EF-B22E-F911689E51D9 In your email, urge the Board of Supervisors members to support the resolution presented by George Overstreet that says the Board of Supervisors will not pass any gun control affecting their government buildings, parks, recreation and community centers or at permitted events and adjoining streets even though they now have the power to do so. | | | |
