KGTP - BREXIT, Gun / Magazine Bans, and Mike Bloomberg's Money

Fellow Members of the King George TEA Party:
.
This is just a quick note.  Bob send me two articles, included in their entirety below, that should be of interest to all.

And then there is, immediately below, a very short article about Nigel Farage's BREXIT speech.  Tomorrow will be the U.K.'s Independence Day, this time from the European Union.  Farage's speech is absolutely fantastic and DEFINITELY worth the couple of minutes to listen to.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

NIGEL FARAGE BIDS FAREWELL TO THE EU

We're less than 48 hours away from Britain's exit from the European Union (oh happy day!), and today at the EU Parliament in Strasbourg the irrepressible Nigel Farage took a well deserved victory lap. Very much worth watching the whole five minutes here, especially for the cheeky violation of EU Parliament rules against displaying national flags at the end. Watch all the way through to the churlish chairlady, who has clearly learned nothing.

Best line of Farage's speech: "Populism turns out to be popular!" Heh.

VA Dem Senator: I'm Not Backing Gun Or Magazine Bans

One of four Democrat state senators in Virginia who have gone on the record in opposition to Gov. Ralph Northam's gun ban bill now says he won't back any legislation that bans firearms or magazines.

Sen. Lynwood Lewis, who represents Virginia's Eastern Shore as well as part of Norfolk, says in a new editorial on the state of gun legislation that his focus is on what he deems "access issues" or, as he put it, "trying to make sure that the filter between those whom we all agree should not have access to firearms is a tight one." That's why Lewis says he supports the universal background check bill that cleared the Senate, as well as "red flag" legislation. Lewis says bills targeting guns and magazines are a different issue entirely.

The bill which rightfully had everyone very concerned (SB16) never even made it out of committee. That is why I caution everyone who was so worried about the bill that anybody can introduce a bill — whether it passes or not is a completely different question. There is no Senate bill now regarding the banning of assault rifles. The Governor's bill on this topic was introduced in the House of Delegates and is being carried by Delegate Mark Levine. As I stated publicly before the Session and as was reported in Eastern Shore news media I will not be supporting any type of ban legislation whether on a particular type of firearm or a particular type of magazine.

Lewis says he also has major concerns with a couple of other gun bills that actually do deal with access to firearms

In addition Senator Howell has proposed SB581 which is very problematic and further highlights the cultural divide in our Commonwealth. That bill has an unintended consequence making it very difficult for our young people between the ages of fourteen and eighteen to have access to firearms for hunting and other purposes. Unless that legislation is amended in some significant way I will not be voting in favor of it.

Senator Saslaw put in a bill which would raise the legal age for firearm purchases to twenty-one. As a general philosophical approach to legislation which seeks to increase the age threshold from eighteen to twenty-one I have a problem, since we allow eighteen year olds to vote and in all other respects be treated as adult members of society. I do not believe that we can pick and choose for which things they should be held accountable as adults. We should have had that discussion decades ago when we decided to treat eighteen year olds as full adults. Unless we want to have that larger discussion again, I will resist increasing the age to twenty-one

Democrats have a 21-19 advantage in Virginia's state senate, which means without Lewis's support, the best Democrats could hope for would be a 20-20 tie with the tie-breaking vote to approve a gun ban coming from Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax. At last report, however, Lewis has three other Democrat colleagues in the Senate who are also objecting to the current language of HB 961. If that voting bloc remains intact, Northam's gun ban bill won't have the votes to get to his desk.

Virginia gun owners need to keep up their contacts with legislators, even if you think your state senator or delegate is unpersuadable. They need to be hearing from their constituents, and they need to know that, despite what Michael Bloomberg tells them, the voters in their districts aren't demanding legislation that turns legal gun owners into criminals while ignoring those actually responsible for committing robberies, shootings, and homicides. Virginia gun owners are sure to see Gov. Ralph Northam sign some awful bills, but right now there's a real chance that the centerpiece of his gun control agenda can be defeated before it can become law

Sounds like time to pound VA legislators.  And this:

Gun control group plans to spend $60M on 2020 elections

Everytown for Gun Safety announced on Monday its plan to spend at least $60 million in the 2020 election, which is nearly double what the National Rifle Association (NRA) spent in 2016.

Billionaire former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg, who is running for the Democratic presidential nomination, is a co-founder of Everytown and is the organization's largest donor.

Bloomberg has put gun control at the forefront of his campaign, but Everytown has said it will treat him like any other candidate in terms of endorsements.

"This massive 2020 effort is fueled by a combination of financial resources, unprecedented grassroots power and a consensus among more than 90 percent of Americans across party lines that we need action now to reduce gun violence," Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action, a part of Everytown for Gun Safety, said in the press release.

In 2016, the NRA spent $36 million, backing President Trump.

Everytown said it is focused on defeating President Trump, flipping the Senate and defending the House majority as well as engaging on a state level.

It mentioned Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas and Wisconsin as states it is working in.

Everytown spent the most among gun violence prevention groups in the 2018 midterms at $30 million, outspending the NRA. It also spent more than $2.5 million on the Virginia General Assembly elections in 2019.

VA-ALERT: VCDL Legislative Update 1/27/2020 with Action item

View this email in your browser

1. More gun control bills pass out of committee
2. Action item: Let's flood the phone lines at the General Assembly!

1. More gun control bills pass out of committee

On Friday the House Public Safety committee met to hear a series of gun-control bills.  This type of hearing is normally done in subcommittee, but they skipped the subcommittee meeting.

Some of the bills duplicated or were similar to each other. Those bills were rolled together into one single bill.  No pro-gun bills were heard and all the gun-control bills passed out of committee and are headed to the Floor.

Here are the seven gun-control bills that came out of committee.  Bad votes are in red, bi-partisan votes are underlined.  Not a single Democrat on the committee voted even once to support gun owners.  Delegates Ronnie Campbell and Amanda Batten stood with gun owners 100%:

HB 2, Plum, Universal Background Checks. It doesn't even allow for the loaning of a gun, even among hunters, unless both parties stay right next to each other the entire time.  Passed on party-line vote:

YEAS--Hope, Bourne, Plum, Kory, Lopez, Rasoul, Price, Levine, Carroll Foy, Helmer, Cole, J.G., Simonds, Jenkins--13.

NAYS--Wright, Robinson, Wilt, Fariss, Rush, Davis, Campbell, R.R., Coyner, Batten--9.

-

HB 9, Bourne, requires reporting of a lost or stolen gun within 24 hours of the discovery of the loss or theft.  This bill implies that the gun owner could be liable if the lost or stolen gun is used in a crime, unless it is reported within the 24-hours.  That is a bad precedent.  Passed by a vote of 15 to 7, with some Republicans supporting it:

YEAS--Hope, Bourne, Plum, Kory, Lopez, Rasoul, Price, Levine, Carroll Foy, Helmer, Cole, J.G., Simonds, Jenkins, Robinson, Coyner--15.

NAYS--Wright, Wilt, Fariss, Rush, Davis, Campbell, R.R., Batten--7.

-

HB 421, Price, destroys the firearm preemption law, allowing localities to make confusing ordinances, resolutions, or motions that affect the possession, carrying, storage, or transport of firearms or ammunition.  It passed on a party-line vote:

YEAS--Hope, Bourne, Plum, Kory, Lopez, Rasoul, Price, Levine, Carroll Foy, Helmer, Cole, J.G., Simonds, Jenkins--13.

NAYS--Wright, Robinson, Wilt, Fariss, Rush, Davis, Campbell, R.R., Coyner, Batten--9.

-

HB 1083, Hayes, makes it a felony to leave a loaded, unsecured firearm where someone under 18 years old has access to it.  Many home invasions have been stopped by someone under 18 using a firearm.  Passed by a party-line vote:

YEAS--Hope, Bourne, Plum, Kory, Lopez, Rasoul, Price, Levine, Carroll Foy, Helmer, Cole, J.G., Simonds, Jenkins--13.

NAYS--Wright, Robinson, Wilt, Fariss, Rush, Davis, Campbell, R.R., Coyner, Batten--9.

-

HB 674, Sullivan, Red Flag law.  Sullivan claimed this bill will help prevents suicides.  Baloney.  It shreds the Constitution.  Passed by a party-line vote:

YEAS--Hope, Bourne, Plum, Kory, Lopez, Rasoul, Price, Levine, Carroll Foy, Helmer, Cole, J.G., Simonds, Jenkins--13.

NAYS--Wright, Robinson, Wilt, Fariss, Rush, Davis, Campbell, R.R., Coyner, Batten--9.

-

HB 812, Ward, One Handgun a Month.  Worst of two bills that were rolled together.  There is no exemption for CHP holders that the old law had.  Passed on a party-line vote:

YEAS--Hope, Bourne, Plum, Kory, Lopez, Rasoul, Price, Levine, Carroll Foy, Helmer, Cole, J.G., Simonds, Jenkins--13.

NAYS--Wright, Robinson, Wilt, Fariss, Rush, Davis, Campbell, R.R., Coyner, Batten--9.

-

HB 1004, Mullin, takes away a person's guns even in his own home if there is a protective order out against him, setting up that person to be murdered by a vengeful spouse or other person.  Mullins had a chip on his shoulder when discussing his bill and was called out for how he was addressing fellow committee members who questioned him on the bill.  Passed on a 20 to 2 vote, with many Republicans voting for the bill:

YEAS--Hope, Bourne, Plum, Kory, Lopez, Rasoul, Price, Levine, Carroll Foy, Helmer, Cole, J.G., Simonds, Jenkins, Wright, Robinson, Wilt, Fariss, Rush, Davis, Coyner--20.

NAYS--Campbell, R.R., Batten--2.

Re: Natural Rights

Dear Robert,

Thank you for reaching out to me with this message. I always appreciate hearing from constituents about the issues they are passionate about.

I was elected on the promise to my constituents to pass and support common sense gun safety legislation such as background checks. Though some fear that the General Assembly will move to ban all guns and pass unconstitutional laws, I'd like to reassure you that those beliefs are false. I will full-heartedly support measures to prevent gun violence that simultaneously respect that Constitutional rights of law-abiding citizens and make our communities safer.

Sincerely,

Martha Mugler

Subject: Natural Rights

Dear Martha Martin Mugler,

I am writing you make sure you understand your duties as my servant in Virginia's House of Representatives. I assume you are familiar with the concept of natural rights but in the light of the current political climate, you can forgive me if I take the opportunity to explain what I see as the critical components of the concept that relate to your position as my representative.

Natural rights are rights that are inherent in our individual human nature. It helps to understand that the common nature of all of humanity is by the design of an unchanging God. Regardless of the origin, you must understand that these rights are inalienable and unchanging. This means they are a part of us and that not only has a government no authority to try and strip these rights away from us, no government has the ability to do so. In as much as a government attempts to infringe on the natural rights of the people, to the same degree it becomes tyrannical. Whether or not a person has voiced opposition to a tyrannical law, their very nature will reject it. In this way all such laws breed disrespect for the law and for the government enforcing it.

Now, in case I have to explain what was once self evident, you should know that right of self defense is a natural right. And since humans do not have the powerful claws of a bear, nor the sharp teeth of a tiger, we use the natural gifts we have to create and prepare our defenses. Today the best tool is gun but someday it may be a laser blaster. It is impossible for anyone to know and understand all of the latest trends and technology in the area of defensive weapons, and much more impossible to know all of the potential of human ingenuity. It is certainly impossible, as well as the height of hubris, for you to imagine that you and the largest army of bureaucrats could write a gun law that does not infringe on our right to bear arms.

I and all of your constituents are counting on you to stand and protect us against every one of these gun control measures.

Sincerely,

Robert Bruce Alexander Jr.

KGTP - 22 January 2020

Fellow Members of the King George TEA Party:
.
Today I received another Lobby Day summary and an e-mail from our neighbors to the west, the Fredericksburg Virginia Patriots, and wanted to pass them on for all.  Jeremiah's summary provides excellent insight into the events - complete with some back-of-the-envelope calculations for the "reach" of the Second Amendment Sanctuary movement.  The note from Michael of FVP includes an invitation to meet other candidates running for office (Nick Freitas is an excellent speaker).

James,

I went to Lobby Day. I would estimate closer to 100k were there. It was peaceful, no problems with disagreements, and pretty cold. Plenty of American flags, from the current US flag, historical flags including Gadsden and the pine tree. There was even a Hong Kong flag flown. Not a single white supremacist or racist anything. Multiple people of all races and cultures. And plenty of media, including from out of the country (Telemundo, article here: https://www.telemundo.com/noticias/2020/01/20/marcha-extremista-en-virginia-contra-el-control-de-armas-rompe-pronosticos-y-termina-sin-tmna3649653)

It sent the message that was intended- we are law abiding, peaceful people. But we won't back down. If you follow the old adage that every one person in a politician's office represents 10 more. If you use the original "police" number of 22k, that means there were at least 220k pissed off about it. If you take the middle estimate around 50k, you are up to half a million. At the upper end, it would be a million people. Adding the cold and the fear-mongering by the Governor, its possible that the number who did show up was suppressed, so multiply those numbers by at least 2. Interestingly, that puts the 100k attendee number at the ~2 million people pissed off number, which is about the same number that they claim a mandate from. I don't think that's a coincidence.

We need to keep the pressure on. The Democrats say they will continue their push. We must continue ours on every level. Get a chance to go visit your representatives? Do it. See a representative from another district? Talk to them as well. Make them loathe their nice office.

For the cause of Liberty,

Dear Patriots,

The Fredericksburg Virginia Patriots (FVP) Board of Directors (BOD) met Wednesday January 8, 2020 to discuss the forthcoming year.  As your Chairman, I would like to share a few thoughts about the busy year we have ahead of us.  I also want to remind members that annual dues ($15 per member) must be paid this month.  If you wish to continue as a voting member of the FVP, please make payment at our Patriots Meeting, January 26th, or via PayPal.

The venue for the January General Membership Meeting has changed.  Due to the overwhelming support during the Spotsylvania, Caroline, and Stafford County 2nd Amendment Sanctuary hearings, we will meet January 26, 2020 at Crossroads Baptist Church (4236 Lee Hill School Drive Fredericksburg, VA 22408) at 2:00 PM. This will be our biggest General Membership Meeting in years.  We have received RSVP from all candidates for the Virginia 7th Congressional District, including VA Delegate Nick Freitas, Pete Greenwald, Andrew Knaggs, VA Delegate John McGuire, Tina Ramirez, and Jason Roberge. These candidates are challenging Representative Abigail Spanberger. In addition Jim Snyder, VP of Virginia Citizens Defense League is scheduled to address our membership. We'll also receive updates from supervisors who led the 2nd Amendment Sanctuary County Resolution. This is a must-attend event!

2020 brings special challenges to Patriots in the Commonwealth.  Already, the new progressive majority in Richmond is enacting unconstitutional proposed legislation designed to take away or hinder the natural rights of our citizens.  The gun control legislation has awakened our citizens and initiated a grassroots campaign to preserve our rights through 2nd Amendment Sanctuary, and Constitutional Affirmation resolutions throughout the Commonwealth. 95% of all counties have approved these resolutions and ordinances, in a desperate attempt to prevent these draconian measures from becoming enforceable.  That these proposed legislative measures are sourced from bought and paid legislators from urban centers is no surprise.  Michael Bloomberg and George Soros poured money into the Commonwealth to put them in place.  We have never been closer to a Civil War since 1861. Under the radar, they have also proposed legislation to remove our Electoral College representation, to remove closed primaries, to enact the Equal Rights Amendment (thereby assuring unrestricted abortion in any circumstances, including public funding), severely restricting homeschooling and private education, and a host of punitive regulations closing all avenues to the unrestricted exercise of 2nd Amendment protected rights.

2020 is another election year.  This year we will select representatives to US Congress. We are generally satisfied with the performance of Representative Rob Wittman (1st CD), but are absolutely unsatisfied with Representative Abigail Spanberger (7th CD).  She unseated Representative Dave Brat, assisted in no small part by punitive redistricting and millions of outside dollars from political action groups.  Although she ran as a "moderate" Democrat, her actions speak louder than her election-year words.  She voted for impeachment of President Trump.  Although her sycophantic media apologists declare that she is a "2nd Amendment supporter" her actions belie her words.  All ten of the Commonwealth counties within the 7th CD have enacted 2nd Amendment Sanctuary or Constitutional Affirmation resolutions.  To date, she is still defending so-called "Red Flag" laws, and restrictions on sporting rifles.  She must be defeated this fall. The Fredericksburg Virginia Patriots intend to vet all candidates, both during the Primary Election on June 8th, and for the General Election on November 3rd.

We MUST support candidates who align with our Constitutional Values.

Patriots, this will be a busy year. If you know anyone that wants to be involved, invite them to our meetings.  We look forward to a productive year.

In Liberty,

Michael P. "Moses" Berry
Chairman
Fredericksburg Virginia Patriots
