Hey team -- I wanted to send a quick update. The Virginia Redistricting Commission is currently at an impasse because Republicans refuse to compromise on a congressional map. The commission even canceled the hearing slated for this Friday.
We're asking our supporters to send a written comment to the commission calling for a congressional map that fairly reflects Virginia. Take action by submitting a comment!
A fair map in Virginia doesn't mean creating districts that would send an equal number of Republicans and Democrats to Congress. Virginians have increasingly voted Democratic over the past decade -- and a fair map should reflect that!
Despite egregious Republican gerrymandering after the 2010 Census, Democrats now hold 7 out of 11 congressional seats. To be clear, Democrats now represent districts that were drawn to prevent them from winning. But Republicans on the commission are ignoring the will of the voters and pushing for a map that gives Republicans more influence than voting trends would guide. That is not what fairness looks like.
We need the commission to send a fair congressional map to the General Assembly!
The commission has until November 8 to draw a new map to submit to the General Assembly for consideration. They need to hear from people like you about why that map must fairly reflect voters -- and also what they should know about your community. Specific feedback from voters via public comments will help the commission draw a better map!
Thanks for taking the time to get involved,
The AOTL Virginia Team
