July 27, 2011 Dear Fellow Virginians and Friends, I am writing you today to bring your attention to a column published in today's Washington Times regarding the case of Thomas Haynesworth. Many of you probably have never heard that name and you might be wholly unfamiliar with his case. However, this case is a very important demonstration of justice gone awry. Thomas Haynesworth was convicted at the age of 18 of raping three women. After spending nearly three decades in prison, DNA evidence proved that he was innocent of at least one of the three crimes he was convicted of. As it turned out, another man who is already serving time for serial rape was the perpetrator. After carefully reviewing the evidence, it is my wholehearted belief that Mr. Haynesworth was wrongly convicted of all counts. As Americans, justice is a core principle to who we are and what makes our nation great. There is nothing more wrong than putting an innocent man behind bars - and when we encounter a miscarriage of justice it is our duty to seek to restore it. Please take the time to read this column by David Keene by clicking here. I appreciate David Keene's willingness to stand up and take a bold position on this case - it is a true testament to the steadfast conservative leadership he is known and widely respected for. I welcome your feedback and comments. Sincerely, Ken Cuccinelli, II Attorney General of Virginia |
