Reid bill would require background checks to purchase explosives
By Pete Kasperowicz - 04/24/13 09:19 AM ET

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) on Tuesday introduced a bill that would require background checks to be run on anyone buying explosive powder, a reaction to last week's Boston Marathon bombing.

Reid introduced the bill, S. 792, for Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.), who has been out sick for much of the year. But in a press statement, Lautenberg said the Boston bombing shows that background checks are needed for explosive materials.

"It defies common sense that anyone, even a terrorist, can walk into a store in America and buy explosive powders without a background check or any questions asked," Lautenberg said Tuesday. "Requiring a background check for an explosives permit is a small price to pay to ensure the safety of our communities.

Under current law, people can buy up to 50 pounds of explosive "black powder" with no background check, and can buy unlimited amounts of other explosive powders, such as "black powder substitute" and "smokeless powder."

Lautenberg's bill would require a background check for the purchase of any of these powders.

It would also let the attorney general stop the sale of explosives if a background check shows the applicant is a known or suspected terrorist, and if there is a belief the explosives will be used for terrorism.

It would also require a permit to make homemade explosives, and direct the government to study how to better trace the use of explosive powders.

7. ACTION ITEM: Republican Firehouse Primary on May 7th (District 19 in Bedford area)
****************************************************************

A Republican Firehouse Primary for the 19th District House of Delegates is scheduled for Tuesday, May 7th between the hours of 6:00 PM and 9:00 PM. This primary is to fill the seat formally held by the retiring Lacey Putney. Four Republican candidates have filed to run for the seat: Jim McKelvey, successful businessman from Bedford; Terry Austin, Supervisor from Botetourt; Zach Martin, 25 year old college grad from Botetourt; and Zackary Hatcher, Pastor, from Botetourt.

(Jim McKelvey ran for the Republican nomination for Congress in the 5th District in 2010 and received the endorsement of the VCDL-PAC back then. The VCDL-PAC has NOT made an endorsement in this race as of this time, however.)

I encourage all VCDL members in the 19th District to vote on May 7th. This is a critical primary to nominate someone that we can count on to strongly support the 2nd Amendment in the General Assembly.

Contact the candidates and ask them about their position on gun-rights:

Jim McKelvey: http://mckelveyfordelegate.com/

Terry Austin: http://www.austinfordelegate.com/

Zach Martin: http://www.votezachmartin.com/

Zackary Hatcher (Facebook page): https://www.facebook.com/hatcherfordelegate

Voting locations within the 19th District are:

*Bedford County and Bedford City voters: Thaxton Community Center (Rt 460 and Rt 831, Thaxton)

*Botetourt County voters: Lord Botetourt High School (1435 Roanoke Rd, Daleville)

*Alleghany and City of Covington voters: Old Alleghany County Board of Supervisors Board Meeting Room (110 Rosedale Ave, Covington)

Thank you for voting on May 7th.

A Record of Experience and Leadership

Jeannemarie Davis for Lt. Governor of Virginia -- ACTIVATE IMAGES NOW TO SEE THE BANNER!

Dear Delegate,

Once again, I want to thank you for filing to serve as a Delegate at the upcoming Republican Convention on May 18th where we will nominate our candidates for Lt. Governor and Attorney General.

I have had a remarkable seven and one half months traveling over 37,000 miles throughout Virginia listening to and learning from citizens in every corner of our Commonwealth.

With seven candidates for Lt. Governor, I am often asked what distinguishes me from the others who are running and I'd like to share that answer with you.

The Lt. Governor has two "duties" as provided in the Virginia statute:  to preside over the State Senate and to stand ready to serve as Governor, should the Governor be unable to fulfill his responsibilities.  Both of these duties are serious tasks that require an individual who is fully prepared to serve.

I believe that it is my depth and range of experience in the State House, State Senate and the Governor's Cabinet, directing the Washington D.C. office, which makes me the best prepared to take on the role of Lt. Governor.

In 1997 I was elected to the House of Delegates, representing a Democrat leaning District.  I was elected by my peers to serve as my Freshman Class President and in my third term was elected to serve as the House Majority Whip.  I am the only woman in the history of the General Assembly to be elected into a top leadership position!

In 2003, I was elected to serve in the State Senate where I was the only Republican and pro-life woman and chaired the Rules Subcommittee on Studies.  During my tenure in the Senate and the two years following, I worked in the private sector as a partner in a small technology consulting firm.

In 2009, I was asked to serve in the Governor's Cabinet as the Director of the Virginia Office of Intergovernmental Affairs, in Washington, D.C. where I was responsible for working with our Congressional Delegation and the other Governor's offices on watching over Federal legislation and regulations that directly impacted states.

As a result of this service, I am the only candidate for Lt. Governor who has Legislative Branch, Executive Branch, Federal government and private sector experience.  I know how the Governor's office functions, the responsibilities of each executive department and agency and, even more importantly, how the policies of the Federal government impact each of those departments and agencies as I represented each and every one of them for three years while leading the Washington Office.

This experience will allow me to be a great partner for Governor Cuccinelli and to assist him from day one in any area that he requests. This is a very serious time in our country's history and it is imperative that just as we will have an experienced leader as our next Governor and Attorney General, that we have an experienced leader as our next Lt. Governor.  Having worked with Ken and our two Attorney General candidates while serving in the State Senate, we will be a team that is Ready to Lead from Day One!

It has been a great privilege for me to serve Virginians in the General Assembly and in Washington and I would be honored to serve as your next Lt. Governor.

I look forward to seeing you at the Convention on May 18th and will continue to work to have your support!

Ready to Lead,

Jeannemarie

Congratulations

Dear Robert,

Congratulations on being a elected a Delegate to the 2013 RPV State Convention!

I know that you are receiving daily emails and phone calls from the Lt. Governor and Attorney General candidates, but I wanted to take a moment to reach out to you personally.

On May 18th, thousands of folks from all across Virginia will be converging on Richmond to nominate our Republican ticket and to launch the 2013 campaign. I am looking forward to speaking to the Convention early on Saturday morning about my record as Attorney General and what I want to accomplish as our next Governor.

But before the RPV Convention gets started, there are a few things I could use your help with.

First, if you have not signed up to become a volunteer for my campaign, I would appreciate it if you would take a moment and fill out the online form by clicking here.

We are going to win this campaign one phone call, one door knock, one neighbor talking to a neighbor at a time and I could use your help.

Second, I would like to ask you to become a part of a select group of grassroots leaders by becoming a Neighborhood Leader. This core grassroots leadership team will play an important role in electing our entire ticket this fall and you can join by clicking here and checking the box: "Be a Neighborhood Leader."

Third, I want to ask you to bring a canned food item or two to the RPV Convention to support the Central Virginia Food Bank. There are a lot of families all across Virginia who are struggling right now, and I want all of us to join together to help them. We will have a collection station set up right outside the convention entrance and I hope that I can count on you to donate a couple non perishable food items.

Fourth, I want you to attend the Convention in Richmond next month and cheer on the candidates you are supporting for Lt. Governor and Attorney General with as much enthusiasm as you can. But, when the final ballot has been cast and we have nominated our entire ticket, I need you to join our united team. We can win this year, but only if we leave Richmond on May 18th united and ready to take our message of opportunity to the people of Virginia.

I look forward to seeing you in Richmond for the RPV State Convention next month.

Sincerely,

Ken Cuccinelli II
Virginia Attorney General
